Do we need normals? The Eyes Have It, Frankenstein visits Shanghai and Mike loves Langley

There are days when I wonder about the future of Machinima, or is it that I worry about my future in Machinima and then project that on everyone else, whether they like it or not?

I have, yet again, become utterly bogged down in an over complicated script, and escaped into digital artwork as a way of generating thinking time whilst doing something which feels 'useful'.

You can find some of the output HERE at CGShare. The textures I made and uploaded are free and allow for unrestricted use. Some are part of a set including a normal map and heightfield which could be used as a specular map. I'd love to know if these are useful, and if including normal maps is something helpful.

Reasons to be cheerful (not including nanny goats cf Ian Dury)
Part 1
From time to time the Moviestorm forums have erupted with an ardent campaign for a particular feature to be given priority by the developers. Sometimes the bods in charge have a fee moment and are able to oblige, at other times they are wholly occupied fending off unexpected crisis, or attending to something important, but invisible, in the underlying code.

At other times the artwork and animation for a pack have been more or less completed, but can't squeeze through the busy pipeline necessary to include new content as part of the official program. This must be a common factor in many businesses with a small staff.

Chris Ollis, who has been central to the art department at Moviestorm Towers had occasionally indulged in bit of creative queue jumping by releasing work as a completely separate addon, through the route which regular user mods are released.

Now he has taken this further, by offering packs for sale on his own modding site, Moddingstorm This means he can offer support, do his own QA, take payment and generally get around the bottleneck which has a times troubled official pack releases. Moviestorm have often shown an ability to be creative in their business models and they see Chris's independent site as an asset, in the same way that they regard regular user mods. Of course, Chris's inside knowledge means he has a head start, and the quality and depth of his work is outstanding.

His latest release allows users much more fine control over their character's eyes, and is one of those 'must have' addons.

Reasons to be cheerful
Part2

There are times when I'm trying to force machinima to look like CGI, and never being satisfied, when I watch, or rewatch a movie , and remember what it's all about. Nahton's Frankenstein in Shanghai is a prime example.

There's a mass of underlying skill gone into making this, all of which is lightly and charmingly distributed. it isn't perfect, and it wouldn't work so well if it was.
A commenter said "They will have to chisel the smile off my face!" and what a wonderful end to aim for.

Reasons To Be Cheerful
