I'm writing this blog on an ancient pc which missed going to the tip before Christmas. It's a Frankenstein's monster of a machine, with electronic guts hanging out of the side, and mismatched components stitched together from even older machines.
Despite its shortcomings the Frankenpc actually works, unlike my regular model, which finally gave up an unequal battle with a boiling graphic card just before the festive season, and so became uneconomic to repair.
Thankfully this low resolution wonder horse need only trot on for a week or so as a reorganisation of family finances means the **new pc** should arrive next week.
(please feel free to substitute fanfares on brass instruments for the **s in the previous sentence)
I am aware after last year's resolution to learn to play the Ukelele that the general unpredictability of life has a tendency to intervene into the best laid plans, despite the kind note from Miss Hawaii sincerely hoping that I enjoy playing my new instrument, I hope she will be able to deal with the disappointment.
Thoughts for 2011?
My feeling is that Machinima is about to emerge from the shadows, and that move is likely to be accompanied by an increasing awareness of legality. I'm finding myself wishing that as a whole community we could clear the decks, and see what remained if we could magically remove all elements of piracy from the world of machinima.
I think the decluttering would be a healthy move at this point.
I'm not talk 'witch hunts' or pointy fingers, more advocating a change in the tide and a fresh attitude about what can be achieved using affordable software and appropriately licensed music and content.
The advantages in terms of opening up communication channels, and in encouraging exchange of skills would be huge.
